Ackee & Saltfish Pinwheels are a clever way to serve Jamaica’s national dish as a party appetizer. Arrange on a platter and put out with a sauce of your choosing, they are good to go for a crowd. They would also make delicious additions to your kid’s lunchboxes.
Store Bought or Homemade Pastry?
There is nothing like scratch made pastry 😍. Nothing like the reward of layering butter and dough to then turn out beautiful flaky layers of pastry.
EXCEPT!
All of that takes time and frankly can be very intimidating for the novice baker. With that in mind, I stepped away from my years of practice and pastry experience. And went towards a section of the grocery store you would not ever usually find me.
Not everyone has a good couple of hours to devote to pastry making. Plus I wanted this recipe to be easy to tackle for anyone regardless of skill level. And more importantly, that you would be in and out of the kitchen, in a matter of minutes and on to your other pressing plans.
So with all those thoughts, I quelled my hesitation, dismissed my reluctance, and picked up a can of store brand crescent dough.
I’ll be the first to note that I personally do not like the fat that is used to make this dough. I grew up using butter (no margarine #buttersnob) then transitioned to a pastry position where butter was everything; I tend to notice the taste and I’m not a fan. The flavor of the ackee and saltfish does mask the margarine taste to an extent. But for me I still pick it up in the after taste. Webster on the other hand, found them absolutely delicious!
How to Make Ackee & Saltfish Pinwheels
Making the pinwheels is simple:
- Remove the dough from the cylinder and unroll onto a lightly floured surface.
- Press the cut pieces together to join into one full sheet
- Spread the prepared ackee and saltfish evenly
- Roll up the dough and score
- Chill till firm then slice into pinwheels
- Bake! The pinwheels bakes for 12 to 15 minutes at 350F
That’s it!
Like the spring rolls and ackee and saltfish on twice fried green plantains, this is a nice twist on a traditional dish.
