Three delicious milkshakes with unusual ice cream flavour as their base: ackee!

Ackee ice cream

To make these milkshakes you’ll first need to make ackee ice cream!

My recommendation for a quick recipe is the Easy Ackee Ice Cream as it’s the fastest to make. Also, it’s a no churn recipe so you don’t need to have an ice cream maker.

no churn ackee ice cream

It’s a tad on the sweet side due to the condensed milk.

Alternately, you could use the base recipe from the Ackee Bourbon Ice Cream with Dulce de Leche ripple. Make just a plain ackee ice cream following the instructions there but omitting the bourbon and dulce.

Dairy free ackee milkshake

The recipe below calls for milk. To make a dairy-free milkshake substitute a dairy free milk. My favourite is a blend of almond and coconut milks. In my opinion, on its own coconut milk is too fatty. And by itself almond is too thin. The sweet spot is a combination of both. About half and half but I usually eyeball.

For dairy free ackee ice cream. See this recipe for Toasted Coconut and Ackee Ice cream, leave out the toasted coconut for a plain ackee ice cream.

Don’t want to make ackee ice cream?

If you’re curious about the taste of ackee milkshake but don’t want to commit to making ackee ice cream. You can substitute the 3 scoops of ackee ice cream called for with 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream and 1/2 cup of soft parboiled ackee.

The easiest way to blend a milkshake

I previously worked as a pizza and pastry cook at an American gastropub. Pizza and pastry is a strange combination of duties I know. But that’s just how it was broken down at this particular restaurant.

Anywho, one of the menu items I’d have to make was a bourbon milkshake. Making said milkshake was honestly a pain in the ass. The milkshakes were delicious, but they weren’t ordered enough to warrant the blender taking up as much space as it would on my station.

One particular shift, another cook was using the only blender we had at the time when the milkshake order came in. My sous chef shrugged and said why not use this? Handing me his immersion blender and it was like heaven opened. Why had we not thought of this before!!!!!

The bartender would bring me the bourbon base for the milkshake in the stainless steel cups. Which was the perfect size for blending in.

Best of all, I no longer had to go through the stress of setting up the blender to only have to take it down if another cook needed it. Now I could keep the immersion blender on my station which took up less to no space by comparison. I could blend up to two milkshakes at a time. And in the unlikely event that there were four milkshakes ordered at once then getting the blender was reasonable.

This happy accidental discovery of using the immersion blender is one I happily continue to use.

I wanted to choose flavors that when went with the ackee such as caramel, hazelnut and vanilla. Though ackee ice cream is a bit of an unusual choice for a milkshake. I feel like these combinations are approachable and not nearly as over the top as Legendairy Milkshakes! Whoa! Tennessee was already on my list of states to visit to try hot chicken; but these milkshakes are the kind of silliness I would need to try at least once and have added to the desire to push Tennessee higher to the top of the list.

Cookies n Cream Milkshake

Instead of Oreos which are typical in anything cookies and cream; I went with vanilla cookies instead. The cookies get crushed in the blend, then a whole cookie is added to top it all off.

Salted Caramel Banana Milkshake

Possibly my favourite combination. Sweet and salty does the trick every time! For this milkshake I added a banana and salted caramel to the mix.

To finish a bruleed banana, and a pretzel. To make bruleed bananas:

  • Place slices of banana on a baking tray or plate (fire resistant).
  • Sprinkle slices with sugar (raw or turbinado sugar is a good choice for this as they don’t dissolve quickly)
  • Heat slices with a blow torch till the sugar caramelises. Let it cool briefly before moving it.

Hazelnut Milkshake

This variation features a splash of frangelico and is topped with ferrero rocher. Nutella or hazelnut butter would also be a delicious add in to this blend.
